macfarlane looked up sharply. the hospital director had mentioned that a lawyer might come by to ask a few questions about a corpse, but he had not been expecting the man so early in the day. clearing his throat and rising stiffly from his chair, he replied, “ mr. beom — of course. i haven’t had lunch yet, no. ”
‘ uh, you might want to save that lunch for later, ’ a pause. face contorts from the thought of yesterday when he couldn’t bare to look at food without thinking of the photos. he’s quick to draw the usb from his bag, placing it on the desk without hesitation – he’d do anything to rid of it form his possession as much as possible. ‘ i hope it’s not too much to ask for an analysis. ’
‘ you know, i don’t know about you but i think there are aliens out there, ’ he’s going to regret saying this the very next morning but fuck it he’s already had two drinks – he can say whatever he wants; it’s his privilege. hands flail as if they’re trying to explain what he couldn’t with words, with the glass in hand barely held with thumb and index, ‘ it’d be a waste of space. no? you’re a star scientist. shouldn’t you know? ’
‘ doctor macfarlane? ’ it’s all a matter of procedure; one cannot start a conversation by pulling out a photo of a gutted jane ( face: unrecognizable ; organs : missing ) – or rather, he can’t. ‘ atticus beom. lawyer. i was told you could assist me with a murder case? i’ve been having trouble identifying some of the, uh, missing organs – have you had lunch yet? ’
after the release of atticus’ biography, it became quite apparent that he grew quite notable, which seemed to contradict his typical humble attitude. it took a while for him to get used to the abrupt amount of acclaim coming his way, as he had been so adapted to a modest, poorer lifestyle that it was foreign. however, he never would of known that being so lionized would allow him to become a mentor for those other than his children.
frankly, atticus was rather excited to become acquainted with his mentee (despite that he hardly knew anything about him, rather than his last name); it was such a new, strange feeling, becoming that of a guide for another person. and hell, meeting him face to face brought a small, soft grin to pull at his lips.

‘ atticus beom –– sir, it’s an honour to finally meet you. been a fan since i was little ! i bet you hear that a lot – ’ they’re burst of words rather than a full sentence, though it is a miracle that he is even able to form words in the first place in front of his childhood hero. every last drop of blood seem to have been simultaneously filled and drained from his head, reverting him back to his childhood. his face can barely contain the excitement: lips fidgeting, fighting a smile until he gives in –– pursed lips lift upward, to reveal an odd dimple.

chapter i / early life
↳ a. (1950) KOREA.
His parents met during the Korean War where they were both refugees from the city of Hungnam, now currently in North Korea. They would always tell him the story of the US soldier that gave them a candy as a Christmas gift during the time of great despair. They often spoke about the little act of kindness and the gentle whisper of the story lulled the boy to sleep, where he would meet the heroes in his dream.
↳ b. (1981-1998) KOREATOWN, LA.
He is born three months later, on 9 November 1981, after the family’s immigration to the United States. It’s a Monday, Hall & Oates’ Private Eyes is playing on the radio, and the Beom family welcomes their youngest child to the world. He is named after Atticus Finch from To Kill a Mockingbird ( that his mother has been reading to learn English ) in hopes that the boy would, too, grow up like the attorney –– intelligent, kind, and moral.
He spends the majority of his childhood with his nose stuck in books. His parents would apologise for their absence due to late night shifts, but he doesn’t mind as long as he has his books. It isn’t until seventh grade that he gets his hand on To Kill a Mockingbird ( half furious at the ending ) – and by god he will change the world.

↳ a. (1998-2002) PHILADELPHIA, PA.
He receives a full scholarship to University of Pennsylvania in order to study History. His day mostly consists of listening to the news and brooding in anger from the injustice in the world like most other college students. No matter his workload, he never forgets to call his parents every night either ; there are only three times where he does forget –– but not on purpose: 1. the night of the first civil rights protest he attends where he is knocked in the head from police brutality. He wakes up the next day at a hospital ( the clinking of metal equipments , hush-hush of nurses and guardian ) ; 2. the morning of his arrest by the police for organising a student rally which he is released the very next day due to lack of evidence ; 3. the last day of his undergrad and, of course, he gets punched in the face.
↳ b. (2002-2005) CAMBRIDGE, MA.
In his last year, he decides he wants to be a lawyer. With decent GPA and LSAT, getting into law school isn’t a hassle –– the interview is. He’s viewed as a charity case to most of the interviewers, only interested in grabbing him to fill up their multicultural quota. He doesn’t complain at their treatment, but he remembers their names. Three years pass like a breeze, he feels ready.

After becoming a lawyer, he partners with Basil Young, a young man who shares similar beliefs as Atticus.
